Two ECE Assistant Professors win best paper awards

Riverside, Ca –

Prof. Nanpeng Yu and his Ph.D. students Wenyu Wang, and Zhouyu Lu won the Best Paper Award at the Second International Conference on Green Communications, Computing and Technologies. The technical paper entitled “Advanced Metering Infrastructure Data Driven Phase Identification in Smart Grid” was selected as the only Best Paper Award at the conference out of the 672 submissions. It addresses the fundamental problem of topology identification in smart grid. A constraint-driven hybrid clustering algorithm is developed. The algorithm leverages smart meter data to identify the electrical phase connections of structures and buildings. The proposed algorithm significantly improves the phase identification accuracy in power distribution systems. Many electric utilities in North America is adopting the proposed technology in field demonstrations.

Prof. Hyoseung Kim won the Best Paper Award at the 23rd IEEE International Conference on Embedded and Real-Time Computing Systems and Applications (RTCSA). The paper, ” A Server-based Approach for Predictable GPU Access Control,” presents a predictable and efficient way to accelerate computing-intensive tasks of recent real-time embedded and cyber-physical systems with a graphics processing unit (GPU). The proposed technique is also applicable to other types of hardware accelerators such a digital signal processor (DSP). The work is done in collaboration with researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and General Motors.
