Hung-Wei Tseng, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at UC Riverside, and his former undergraduate student researchers. Alec Rohloff, Zackary Allen, Joshua Okrend and Chengyi Nie as well as a high-school student intern, Kung-Min Lin, received the outstanding paper award in the 27th IEEE Real-Time and Embedded Technology and Applications Symposium (RTAS 2021). In their paper entitled “OpenUVR: an Open-Source System Framework for Untethered Virtual Reality Applications”, they designed an untethered virtual reality framework that delivers high-quality VR effects with lower than 15 ms visual latency, a latency that is competitive to tether solutions but low enough to avoid motion sickness, simply with commodity hardware components. The key to their success is the highly optimized software stack that removes redundant memory copies and network layers.
