Summery of the Student Activities
The three US students along with the Dr. Sheldon Tan spent five weeks in Beijing, China from July 20 to Aug. 23. Before the departure, Jacob and Nemata had enrolled in DR. Sheldon Tan’s graduate level course: EE213, Computer-Aided Electronic Circuit Analysis, which prepares them for the joint research project with Prof. Hong’s group at Tsinghua University when they were in Tsinghua. The three students also obtained basic survival Chinese language training in the Dr. Sheldon Tan’s Lab by talking to some Chinese Ph.D. students.
The three US students obtained all the visiting visas from Chinese Consulate in Los Angeles and finished all the required paper works such as Student Information Form, Waiver of Liability, Release Form, Student Agreement Form etc in June 2008. Also different from the previous year, the three students were admitted as formal students of Tsinghua (with Tsinghua’s student IDs). In this way, they are qualified for more foreign student benefits. Dr. Tan also made sure all the students had the insurance covering their travel in China before they left US.
On April 23, Krystof and Nemata met Mr. Jun Wang, who was the undergraduate research director at the Bourns College of Engineering in UC Riverside. Jun brought many useful information materials to the students and introduced the several important culture and language issues. Also because of Beijing Olympic Game, the Chinese visa application procedure is different this year and June explains the new application procedure.

June 28 to July 20 Dr. Tan arrived in Beijing on June 28, 2007 to meet Prof. Hong and Prof. Cai and arranged the logistic issues before the US student arrival. In addition to the Tsinghua University, Dr. Tan also visited Fudan University at Shanghai, China and presented one talk during this time.
On July 10, 2007, Dr. Tan visited the State-Key ASIC and System Lab at Fudan University, China, Dr. Tan met Prof. Jiarong Tong, and Prof. Xuan Zeng, who is the director of the Lab. Dr. Tan presented a invited seminar titled “Architecture-level Thermal Modeling and Simulation for Chip-Multiprocessor Designs”, which was well received by the graduate students in Fudan University. Dr. Tan and faculty in Fudan University also discussed the potential collaborations on various research topics.

July 20 to Aug. 23 The three students arrived in the Beijing International Airport at the very early morning on July 20. The Dr. Tan picked them up in the Beijing’s brand new, giant airport terminal 3, which was built for the Beijing Olympic Game. On Aug. 7, 2008, by the invitation of Prof. Xiaolong Yuan, Dr. Tan and the three US students and Xiaoqing Jin visited Beijing JiaoTong University (BJTU). We were greeted by a group of host graduate and undergraduate BJTU students. The US students and BJTU students first have a round-table ice-breaking talk followed by a warm discussion. Then, US students visited featured Student Innovation Lab and the award-winning Modern Physics Lab of BJTU.

On Aug. 8, the long-waited and well anticipated Beijing Olympic Game kicked off with a spectacular opening ceremony at the National Stadium (Bird’s Nest). The US students had the chance to witness the history moment, experienced the spirit of One World and One Dream and participated the Olympic game in person. The Olympic game brought a lot of funs and fond memories to the students.
On Aug. 12, Dr. Tan and the three students have chances to participate the Olympic game in person. Them went to see the field hockey game between the US women team and the Czech Republic women team hold the new Beijing Olympic Parker. However, the weather did not cooperate. Heavy rain and thunder storm almost ruined the game. In the end, we are 30 minutes later to the game when Czech Republic team had a 2-1 lead over USA team. In addition to the social and culture events, the three US students spent most of their time in the EDA Lab and worked jointly with Chinese host graduate students on the development of statistical capacitor extraction methods using Monte Carlo based approaches. In the weekends, in addition to watching the Olympic games, they also visited many famous nearby attractions like Forbidden City, Great Wall, Summer Palace to learn the Chinese cultures and history.
The US students were quick learner and they almost immediately familiarized themselves with the Beijing metro systems and they could do the sightseeing and shopping even by themselves after a few days in Beijing.
