Professor Ping Liang received his Bachelor degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Xian Jiaotong University in 1982, the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1983 and 1987 respectively. He was the founder and CEO of TransDimension Inc., which he founded with a research contract from DARPA in 1997. He later transformed the company into a fabless semiconductor and embedded software company. He led the research and development of multiple ASIC chips, semiconductor IP cores and embedded software products that were used by many fortune 100 companies worldwide in hundreds of millions product units ranging from cell phones, digital cameras, printers, PDAs, MP3 players, storage drives, to network gateways and routers, adapters and set-top boxes. Based on his technology leadership and vision, TransDimension grew into a leader in its market space, was ranked top ten of the fastest growing technology company in Orange County, California for three years and was ranked the 32nd fastest growing technology company in North America in 2005. The company was acquired in the same year.
His research in industry led to 15 granted US and international patents and a large number of pending patents. His earlier inventions provided enabling technologies to the USB 2.0 On-the-Go industry standard, the PictBridge industry standard and the Bluetooth 4.0 High Speed standard. In 2000, he and his collaborator recognized the need and importance of co-existence, coordination and top-level control among multiple wireless protocols, e.g., the Bluetooth and 802.11 Wifi protocols, to achieve higher data throughputs. They proposed and developed technology for co-existence, coordination and top-level control among multiple wireless protocols and filed multiple patents in 2001, which were granted between 2005 and 2007. Co-existence, coordination and top-level control among multiple wireless protocols are at the foundation of single-chip Wifi and Bluetooth solutions used in smartphones and tablets, and in the Bluetooth 4.0 High Speed industry standard released in June 2010, nearly 10 years after he first developed the technology.
His collaboration with Prof. Yingbo Hua at UCR on full duplex radios produced new understandings and excellent results of self-interference cancelation. His collaboration with Prof. Sakhrat Khizroev at the Florida International University on magneto-electric nanoparticles for nano-medicine applications has led to multiple breakthroughs in externally controlled targeted drug delivery and wireless deep brain stimulation and readout. They were the first to develop a method for external AC magnetic field-triggered release of medicine using magneto-electric nanoparticles as carriers after they have crossed the blood-brain barrier, and a method for external magnetic field controlled nano-electroporation to allow drug-carrying magneto-electric nanoparticles to penetrate the membrane of targeted cancer cells and consequently triggering the release of drugs inside cancer cells to increase high-specificity drug uptake and eradication of cancer cells. These results are published in Nature Communications on anti-HIV drug in the brain, Nature: Scientific Reports on ovarian cancer, Nature: Scientific Reports on animal studies, and Nanomedicine on wireless deep brain stimulation and readout (which was ranked in the Top 100 Stories of 2015 in the Discovery Magazine).
In 2013, he co-founded RF DSP Inc., which develops next generation wireless network technologies and is a leader in massive MIMO technology.
Based on the significant impact of his inventions, he was elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors in Dec. 2013. (Election to NAI Fellow status is a high professional distinction accorded to academic inventors who have demonstrated a highly prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development, and the welfare of society.)
