Balandin, professor of electrical engineering and founding chair of the materials science and engineering (MS&E) at the University of California – Riverside (UCR) was elected Fellow of the Institute of Physics (IOP), United Kingdom. He was informed of his election this month.
Election to IOP Fellow is recognition of the peers of his "very high level of achievement in physics and an outstanding contribution to the profession". Professor Balandin is honored for his studies of physical properties of semiconductor nanostructures and graphene. The American and Canadian Fellows of IOP will be recognized at a special event in Boston during the March meeting of the American Physical Society (APS).
The Institute of Physics, based in London, U.K., is a leading scientific society promoting physics and bringing physicists together for the benefit of all. It has a worldwide membership of around 40 000 comprising physicists from all sectors. It works to advance physics research, application and education; and engages with policy makers and the public to develop awareness and understanding of physics. Its publishing company - IOP Publishing - is a world leader in professional scientific communications.
For his research achievements, Professor Balandin was previously elected Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS), Fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA), Fellow of the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE) and Fellow of the American Association for Advancement of Science (AAAS). He is a recipient of the IEEE Pioneer Award in Nanotechnology for the year 2011 for his research on device applications of semiconductor quantum dots and graphene.
