KhitunElectrical Engineering Research Adjunct Professor Alexander G. Khitun is a co-PI on the new $1,550,000.00 National Science Foundation (NSF) four-year project on Hybrid Spintronics and Straintronics: A New Technology for Ultra-Low Energy Computing and Signal Processing Beyond the Year 2020. Dr. Khitun teamed up with Prof. Supriyo Bandyopadhyay (PI), Virginia Commonwealth University, Prof. Pinaki Mazumder, University of Michigan, Prof. Avik Ghosh, University of Virginia, and Prof. Jayasimha Atulasimha, Virginia Commonwealth University to develop a novel hybrid spintronic - straintronic paradigm for switching magnets enabling for an ultra-energy-efficient magnetic computing and signal processing architectures. The project is awarded under the Nanoelectronics 2020 and Beyond competition with the support from multiple Directorates and Divisions of NSF and the Nanoelectronics Research Initiative (NRI) of the Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC).

In a rather unusual development, NSF awarded two Nanoelectronics 2020 and Beyond projects to PIs from the same institution – University of California – Riverside (UCR). Electrical Engineering Professor Balandin leads the project Charge-Density-Wave Computational Fabric: New State Variables and Alternative Material Implementation while Physics Professor Roland Kawakami leads the project Developing a Graphene Spin Computer: Materials, Nano-Devices, Modeling, and Circuits. The present project – Hybrid Spintronics and Straintronics – with co-PI Research Professor Khitun is the third NSF Nanoelectronics 2020 and Beyond project with participation of UCR researchers. Dr. Khitun (see photo) is a Participating Professor in the campus-wide Materials Science and Engineering (MS&E) Program at UCR.
