Desalegne TeweldebrhanElectrical Engineering PhD Candidate Desalegne Teweldebrhan, who conducts his research in Professor Alexander Balandin’s Nano-Device Laboratory (NDL), received the Silver Medal Award of the Materials Research Society (MRS) at the annual meeting in San Francisco. Desalegne gave a talk entitled Tuning of Graphene PropertiDesalegne Teweldebrhanes via Controlled Exposure to Electron Beam Irradiation. The finalists in the MRS graduate research competition were students from the best US and international universities such as Harvard University, Stanford University, UC-Berkeley, Caltech, UCSB, MIT, Penn State, University of Michigan, and University of Tokyo.According to the MRS press release the awards were presented “to honor and encourage graduate students whose academic achievements and current materials research display a high level of excellence and distinction. MRS seeks to recognize students of exceptional ability who show promise for significant future achievement in material research.” The annual MRS Spring Meeting in San Francisco is the world’s largest and most prestigious conference in the field of materials science and engineering. Details of Desalegne’s research can be found on Balandin’s group web-site at
