Ultraviolet Light Shines on Professor Zhengyuan Xu’s Research
 

Xu_portraitThe Army Research Office (ARO) has awarded Professor Zhengyuan Xu a new 4-year grant for his continuing research on non-line-of-sight (NLOS) ultraviolet communications. Following successes in his two existing ARO-funded projects, this new ARO grant will enable his group to further investigate deliverable features of UV communication systems both experimentally and analytically. The project is part of the research of Prof. Xu's Wireless Information Technology Lab (http://witlab.ee.ucr.edu/) that also covers visible light communication, geolocation, navigation, and intelligent transportation.

Optical communication in the deep UV wavelength band (200-280nm) offers unique features in solar blindness, covertness, and NLOS connectivity. These features distinguish UV from conventional optical wireless systems. Coupled with tremendous successes in semiconductor UV source and detector technologies in recent years, significant interest from government, academia and industry emerges in this area for military and civilian applications.
