Electrical Engineering PhD student receives the Gordon Watkins Award
 

Irene CalizoElectrical Engineering PhD student Irene Calizo was selected to receive the Gordon Watkins Award at the UCR Honors Convocation. The prestigious award, named for UCR's first provost, is presented each year to an outstanding graduate student for exceptional community service. The latest of Irene's numerous volunteer activities was coaching a robotics team of girls. She served as advisor to the group known as Robo Girlz, an offshoot of Engineer IT Girls. Irene’s many other awards include UCR's Graduate Division Fellowship, NASA Women in Science & Engineering scholarship and the outstanding research presentation award from the Society of Women Engineers. During her graduate studies at the Department of Electrical Engineering she was also awarded the summer research internship at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). Irene Calizo has been conducting her PhD research in Professor Alexander Balandin's Nano-Device Laboratory (NDL). Her doctoral dissertation deals with the micro-Raman spectroscopic characterization of graphene, which is a newly discovered allotrope of carbon with potential for electronic applications. After her graduation Dr. Irene Calizo will continue her graphene Raman spectroscopy research at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
