Balandin received SRC Inventor Recognition Award

Professor BalandinElectrical Engineering Professor Alexander Balandin received an Inventor Recognition Award from the Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC). The award, which includes a certificate and a prize, was given this week for his invention of the “nanometer-scale transistor architecture providing enhanced carrier mobility”. SRC is the world's leading industry – government technology research consortium, which operates multiple research programs focused on future electronic technologies. Professor Balandin’s invention offers an alternative method for improving the transistor performance through better control of acoustic phonons (crystal lattice vibrations) in nanostructures. This approach has been termed phonon engineering or nanophononics. The Nano-Device Laboratory (NDL) led by Professor Balandin conducts phonon engineering research in several projects sponsored by the SRC-DARPA Functional Engineered Nano Architectonics (FENA) Center and by US AFOSR.
