An article in the most recent issue of IEEE Spectrum discusses a technology developed by UCR researchers to advance the state of the art in computer memory. So called heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) is believed to be one of the most likely next-generation technologies to be implemented by the multi-billion-dollar data storage industry to further defer the fundamental superparamagnetic limit in the information density of memory devices. The technology of nanolasers developed by Dr. Rabee Ikkawi and his teammates in the Professor Khizroev group is considered as one of the more elegant solutions to overcome the key challenges.
