Graduate Student Receives Society of Women Engineers Award

Suchismita GhoshElectrical Engineering graduate student and PhD candidate Suchismita Ghosh has received the 2-nd place award in the nation-wide research poster competition organized by the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and sponsored by IBM, Dow Chemical and Rockwell corporations. The prestigious award was presented at the SWE National Conference held in Baltimore, Maryland. Suchismita carries out her doctoral dissertation research in Professor Alexander Balandin’s Nano-Device Laboratory (NDL). Her award-winning research presentation, entitled Giant Thermal Conductivity of Graphene: Prospects of the Thermal Management Applications, described her experimental investigation of thermal conductivity of graphene. Graphene is a recently discovered allotrope of carbon, which consist of just a single atomic layer of carbon. The measurements of Suchismita and her NDL colleagues revealed that graphene has extremely high thermal conductivity exceeding that of diamond and carbon nanotubes. The superior thermal properties of graphene coupled with its flat geometry and suitability for incorporation in the conventional silicon microelectronic technology make graphene an excellent material for heat removal and thermal management. Seven finalists for the best research award were selected out of many submissions nation-wide. The research posters were judged by the representatives of the leading high-tech companies, government agencies and university faculty. With over 5,500 participants, including 250 exhibitors in attendance, the SWE National Conference is the largest and most comprehensive technical career event for women engineers.
