Professors Liu and LakeA group led by (l. to r.) Electrical Engineering associate professor Jianlin Liu (principal investigator) and professor Roger Lake (co-principal investigator), working with Physics professor Yi Shi (co-principal investigator) at Nanjing University in China, is studying the possibility of future nonvolatile memories, one to two orders of magnitude smaller than state-of-the-art flash memory. Flash memory is a key component in many portable electronics. The three-year project is being funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC).

Graduate and undergraduate students are participating in the project working on nanofabrication, guided self-assembly of nanostructures, device fabrication and characterization, and device simulation. Summer student exchange activities allow groups of UCR students to observe the research style and culture at Nanjing University in China. The project provides the students a multifaceted training experience preparing them for their future careers.
