Nanotechnology Expertise of UCR Researchers in Great Demand at UCLA

Andrey Lavrenov in the Khizroev group at UCR was the first researcher who used the new focused ion beam (FIB)  system,  which was recently acquired by UCLA, to fabricate nanoscale devices with useful features as small as 50 nm.  In a relatively short period of time (of less than a month), he manufactured functioning prototypes of record-small nanomagnetic and nanophotonic devices with great potential to establish next-generation technology benchmarks for computing and medicine related applications.  UCR researchers developed an unprecedented rapid prototyping approach to use FIB-based nanofabrication to dramatically reduce or even close the gap between truly disruptive technology ideas and reality. Currently, the unique devices made by UCR researchers are being extensively tested at Western Digital and Seagate with the hope to create the next leapfrog technology in the multi-billion data storage industry.
