Irene Calizo and Suchismita Ghosh Receive Graduate Awards at SWE Conference
Electrical Engineering graduate students Irene Calizo and Suchismita Ghosh have received the 2nd and 3rd place awards respectively in the national competition of the best graduate student posters organized by The Society of Women Engineers (SWE). The research poster competition was sponsored by IBM and Rockwell corporations. The awards were presented at the SWE National Conference held in Nashville, TN last weekend. Irene and Suchismita carry out their doctoral research in Professor Balandin’s Nano-Device Laboratory (NDL). Irene’s poster entitled the Robust Micro-Raman Spectroscopic Identification and Characterization of Single Atomic Layers of Graphene presents the results of her experimental investigation of the properties of a unique new material system, graphene, which consists of a single plane atomic layer of carbon atoms. Graphene has recently attracted significant attention world-wide as a possible material for future nanoelectronic circuits. Suchismita presented a poster entitled the Measurement of the Thermal Conductivity of the Nanocrystalline Diamond Films by the Transient Plane Source Technique, which describes the results of her experimental study of heat conduction in nanostructured materials important for electronic industry. The finalists for the best poster competition have been selected from those submitted the research abstracts nationwide. The posters, judged by the representatives of the leading companies, government agencies and faculty described the original research with an application in engineering.  With over 5,000 people, including 250 exhibitors in attendance, the SWE National Conference is the largest and most comprehensive career advancement event for women engineers.
