Profs. Sheldon Tan and Jie Chen selected for National Science Foundation Award

Electrical Engineering professors Sheldon Tan and Jie Chen, along with Computer Science professor Jun Yang, won a National Science Foundation Award (CCF-0541456) for "Fast Software Thermal Sensing and Control for Efficient Dynamic Thermal Management." The project will last for three years beginning April 2006 with an award amount of $275,000. Professor Jun Yang leads the project as the PI, and Professors Tan and Chen are co-PIs.

This NSF project supports research on architecture level thermal analysis and modeling for high-performance VLSI and microprocessors. The project addresses the fundamental challenges facing today’s on-chip thermal sensing and control technologies. The thermal sensing technique in even the most recent processors predominantly relies on thermal diodes or sensors. Both suffer from the fixed-location problem as on-chip hot spots migrate at run time. The project aims at developing novel techniques for spectrum and high precision temperature sensing to mitigate this problem. The proposed solutions can lead to more efficient and effective on-line thermal management.

The intellectual merit of the project includes the development of a fast, lean, and accurate software thermal sensor for online temperature tracking. The software adopts a highly efficient and fine-tuned numerical method to calculate temperatures at a fine granularity, both temporally and spatially. It is expected that the software solution will demonstrate a superior accuracy and speed, and hence the potential of becoming a truly competitive remedy for chip temperature sensing.

The project will seek a strong educational component that attracts Ph.D. students and undergraduate students to work as a team with the three professors.
