Physics World: 2 out of 20 Top Graphene Applications Developed at UCR EE Department

The U.K. journal Physics World – the lead publication of the Institute of Physics – has recently selected "top 20 graphene practical applications". The applications were highlighted in a special Focus on Nanotechnology issue, which was distributed among the IEEE Nano Conference participants in Birmingham, U.K. According to this issue, the 2 out of top 20 breakthrough graphene applications came from Professor Alexander A. Balandin’s Nano-Device Laboratory (NDL) at UCR. The applications were described in the issue’s sections entitled “Build Better Electronics” (page 12) and “Remove Unwanted Heat” (page 13). The first application, developed at NDL together with the researchers of the Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago, deals with the graphene-on-diamond carbon-on-carbon technology. It was demonstrated that the current-carrying capacity of graphene can be increased by more than an order of magnitude by replacing the silicon dioxide with synthetic diamond or inexpensive ultrananocrystalline diamond (Nano Letters, 12, 1603, 2012). The second application, which originated in Balandin group, involves thermal interface materials (TIMs) with graphene fillers. The NDL team of graduate student researchers has succeeded in increasing the thermal conductivity of an industrial epoxy-resin-based TIMs from around 5 W/mK to a record 14 W/mK via introduction of the optimized mix of the liquid-phase exfoliated graphene (Nano Letters, 12, 861, 2012).
