Augmented Reality (AR) has the potential to fundamentally change the way people interact with / consume information on the environment surrounding them. Qualcomm Research has been on the forefront of the AR scene by developing enabling technologies driven by the vision of “anytime anywhere AR.” Thanks to cameras, inertial sensors and an ever increasing computing power, mobile phones have become the perfect platform on which one can interact with virtual objects that respect the 3D geometry of the real world. Many innovative applications are enabled by answering two challenging questions:  “Where am I relative to everything else?” and “What am I looking at?” In this talk I will give a high level overview of some of the research projects in our group that attempt to answer the first question. I will talk about Qualcomm’s version of computer vision based Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) and vision aided inertial navigation system. Biography


Arvind Ramanandan graduated with a Ph.D.(2011) in Electrical Engineering at UCR under Prof. Jay A. Farrell’s supervision. His graduate work at UCR mainly focused on high accuracy aided inertial navigation systems for land based vehicles. Since graduating from UCR, he joined Qualcomm Research, San Diego as a Senior Engineer. At Qualcomm, his work mainly focusses on vision aided inertial navigation for indoor pedestrian navigation and mapping on mobile phones.
