Balandin Receives UC Proof-of-Concept Grant to Develop Graphene Thermal Interface Materials

Dr. Alexander A. Balandin, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Founding Chair of Materials Science and Engineering received $145,000 grant from the University of California Proof-of-Concept (POC) Program to develop thermal interface materials with graphene. The goals of POC program is to help with commercialization of high-tech products developed on the basis of university research. Thermal interface materials are used in electronics and optoelectronics to facilitate heat removal from computer chips or other heat generating devices to heat sinks. Graphene – one-atom-thick carbon material – has extremely high thermal conductivity. It was demonstrated in the Balandin lab that addition of graphene can enhance heat conduction properties of several different matrix materials. The latter opens up a variety of potential commercial applications. The unusual thermal conductivity of graphene was discovered in the Balandin lab at UCR in 2007.
