Four EE Professors Awarded $4M for Nano Material Engineering

The Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) announced that $194 million will be dedicated during the next five years to six new university microelectronics research centers to support the continued growth and leadership of the U.S. semiconductor industry.

Five UCR professors were invited to become principal investigators (PIs) in the new Center for Function Accelerated nanoMaterial Engineering (FAME). The Center main office is at the University of California – Los Angeles. The center director is Jane P. Chang, a professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at UCLA. The center is a part of the new Semiconductor Technology Advanced Research network (STARnet).

The UCR professors that are participating in the center are (in alphabetical order): Alexander A. Balandin (EE and MS&E), Alexander Khitun (EE and MS&E), Roger Lake (EE and MS&E), Jeanie Lau (Physics and Astronomy and MS&E) and Jianlin Liu (EE and MS&E). Each participating PI is awarded a budget of about $1M bringing a total of $5M of research funds to UCR.

Professors Balandin, Lau and Liu are part on the center theme focused on investigation of van der Waals materials – a broad range of crystalline solids with layers structure. The van der Waals materials include graphene, topological insulators and charge-density wave materials. It is expected that this class of materials can be used in future information processing. The project of Professor Balandin is entitled Phonon Engineering and Energy Conversion in van der Waals Materials. Professor Liu will lead research on Van der Waals Molecular Beam Epitaxy Growth of Two-Dimensional Layered Material Systems. Professor Lau’s project is Quantum Engineered Collective States in van der Waals Materials. Professor Lake leads the center’s theme on physics, mechanisms, and device prototyping. Professor Khitun is a member of this theme with the project Magnonic Holographic Memory for Information Storage and Data Processing. Professor Lake’s project is entitled Switching by Voltage Control of the Quantum Phase in Misoriented Layers of van der Waals Materials.

The overall goal of FAME is to create and investigate new nonconventional atomic scale engineered materials and structures of multi-function oxides, metals and semiconductors to accelerate innovations in analog, logic and memory devices for revolutionary impact on the semiconductor and defense industries. The new FAME center includes total 35 faculty researchers from 16 participating universities: UCLA, Columbia, Cornell, UC Berkeley, MIT, UC Santa Barbara, Stanford, UC Irvine, Purdue, Rice, UC Riverside, North Carolina State, Caltech, Penn, West Virginia and Yale.
