EE Undergraduate Committee

Undergraduate Committee Members

The Department of Electrical Engineering has an actively functioning Undergraduate Committee (UGC), which consists of five faculty members, with the Undergraduate Advisor serving as the Committee Chairman. The UGC currently includes (in alphabetic order): Professor Alexander A. Balandin (Committee Chair), Professor Matthew Barth, Professor Gerardo Beni, Assistant Professor Amit Roy Chowdhury and Assistant Professor Jianlin Liu.

Undergraduate Committee Functions

The Undergraduate Advisor together with the other committee members assist the undergraduate students with the selection of the technical elective (TE) courses, and answers students' questions related to the academic and professional issues as well as engineering career opportunities. Every year, the Undergraduate Advisor offers the group advising sessions for all EE majors (Spring Quarter) and, on a rotational basis with CSE department, for all CE majors (Spring Quarter). Sample presentations for EE and CE majors offered by the Undergraduate Advisor in 2005 can be found here (for EE) and here (for CE).

The UGC supervises the curriculum development at the Department of Electrical Engineering for both Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering majors. New course proposals by EE faculty are brought to UGC for initial discussion and recommendation. If the course proposals are approved by the UGC (through voting) they are discussed and voted for at the EE faculty meeting. The UGC Chairman organizes voting for any proposed course and/or curriculum changes made by CSE department (pertinent to the jointly offered CE program) or COE Undergraduate Affairs office.

In addition to the curriculum development functions, all UGC members have specific permanent functions within the committee. One member (currently: Professor G. Beni) supervises the EE and CE student petitions and articulation requests, while another member (currently: Professor M. Barth) represents the Department of Electrical Engineering at undergraduate events on campus and other locations. To assist the department in preparation for the ABET accreditation visit, one member (currently: Professor A. Roy Chowdhury) is also a member of the EE ABET Committee. Another member (currently: Professor J.L. Liu) organizes students lab tours and assists with EE representations at the undergraduate events.
