VPN Tutorial - Mac

The following tutorial will help setup a VPN connection to the ENGR domain using Mac OS X.

--------
In order to connect to a virtual private network (VPN) you need to enter configuration settings in Internet Connect. These settings include the VPN server address, account name, and any authentication settings, such as a password or a certificate you were given by the administrator of the network.
If you were given an Internet Connect settings file, open Internet Connect and choose File > Import. If you were given individual settings, follow the instructions below to enter them into Internet Connect.

Open Internet Connect, located in the Applications folder.
Choose File > New VPN Connection and choose PPTP.
Choose Edit Configurations from the Configuration pop-up menu and enter the settings you were given

The server should be 'vpn.engr.ucr.edu', and your account name and password should have been given to you by the IT folks at Engineering.  The User Authentication field should have the 'Password:' radio button checked.  I would also recommend putting a check mark in the box that reads 'Show VPN status in menu bar'.  Click OK.

If you ever need to remove the VPN configuration, open Network preferences and choose Network Port Configurations from the Show pop-up menu. Select the VPN configuration and click Delete.

-----------------

After clicking OK, you should see a window similar to the following:

You can close this window.

Whenever you need to activate the VPN connection click the

icon in the menu bar, and from the drop down menu, select 'Connect'

It will take a moment and then indicate the connection is active by including a connection timer next to the VPN icon:
