Experiments proposed by UCR’s A. N. Korotkov and A. N. Jordan (Univ. of Rochester) have shown that quantum measurement is not necessarily an either – or event as has been taught for 80 years. Instead, one can do a ‘little bit’ of measurement which causes a ‘little bit’ of collapse into an eigenstate of the system. However, this ‘little-bit’ of collapse can be un-collapsed in what Korotkov and Jordan term a ‘quantum undemolition’ experiment. This breakthrough experiment has been realized at UCSB in the group of John Martinis (in collaboration with Korotkov) and is described in Nature News.
