Abstract:  This talk will review the recent progress in optical communications. Starting with a historical perspective, smoke signals used by Native Americans to transmit ~ 1 bit of information, we will describe the key technological advances that enable modern fiber-optic communication systems to transmit ~ 10 Tb/s (~ billion telephone calls) of information capacity on a single fiber-optic cable.

About the Speaker:  Ilya Lyubomirsky was born in Moscow, Russia in 1968. He received dual B.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics from University of Maryland at College Park in 1991, including a Best Thesis in Engineering Award for research in high-density plasma physics, and femto-second laser-solid interactions. Ilya went on to study Electrical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a Hertz Foundation Fellow. The subject of his M.S. thesis was on non-classical quantum states of light, and ways of utilizing such states to test the fundamental principles of Quantum Mechanics. His Ph.D. thesis involved the development of a quantum well far-infrared (FIR) laser, and achieved the first successful measurement of FIR emission from optically pumped quantum wells. During graduate school, Ilya also worked at LLNL with Dr. Lowell L. Wood on various special projects, such as space-based power satellites, and quantum communications. After obtaining his Ph.D. in 1999, Ilya worked in industry, including researching voice-over-packet (VOP) networks at Telcordia Technologies (formerly Bellcore), optical metro-networks at Silicon Valley startup ONI Systems, and ultra-dense wavelength division multiplexing (UDWDM) at Ciena Corp. Most recently, Ilya was on a one year leave at Infinera Corp., researching large-scale photonic integrated circuit (LPIC) technology. Ilya is currently an Electrical Engineering faculty member at UCR, and a principal investigator in the Photonic Systems and Devices Lab.
