Faculty Support: Endowed Chairs - the Hallmark of a Great University

Endowed chairs enable BCOE to attract, retain and honor distinguished academic leaders, who conduct leading-edge research and profoundly enrich the educational experience of undergraduate and graduate students. Through endowed chairs, esteemed scholars receive recognition for past and potential achievements in their fields, and the satisfaction that the University supports research and quality teaching in their discipline.

What is an endowed chair?

An endowed chair is a fund that supports a university professorship or other faculty position. The annual interest on the endowment provides the chairholder with resources for teaching, travel and other activities related to their fields of expertise. An endowed chair provides a financially stable source of funding to support teaching, research and service.

Donors who generously endow chairs ensure academic excellence in teaching and research today, and invest in the future of the college in a truly meaningful way. Endowed chairs are living memorials, perpetuating the donor's name, signifying a permanent commitment to educational excellence.

Named Distinguished Professorship

The Distinguished Professorship honors one who is among a handful of the most distinguished. The chair holder could be a master professional or one who has made nationally or internationally recognized contributions to her/her field.

Named Endowed Chair

An endowed Chair in engineering serves to retain and recruit faculty members of the highest quality, and includes funding to provide for laboratory equipment and expenses associated with scientific, technical and technical research and projects.

Named Endowed Term Chair

An endowed Term Chair provides the college the means to attract outstanding assistant professors by offering them a named chair and research support for at least their first three years.

Named Visiting Professorship

A Visiting Professorship provides funding necessary to bring prominent scholars or other leaders to campus annually, on a short-term, temporary basis to teach or undertake research.

Named Funds for Faculty Excellence in Research & Teaching

An Endowment for Faculty Excellence enables distinguished senior faculty and promising junior faculty to pursue innovative teaching and research. Such endowed funds strengthen Bourns' ability to conduct vitally important research in a variety of engineering fields.

Named Distinguished Lecturer Fund

Endowed funds for lectures and colloquia facilitate the sharing and dissemination of information and research results among members of the academic community. Such funds can bring to the campus scholars and leaders of academic and professional achievement and may be used to enhance the University's outreach to the community as well.

Named Dean's Fund for Academic Leadership

The Dean's Fund provides unrestricted support for the excellence of a college, school or division. Funds are administered at the direction of the Dean.

Named Departmental Fund for Academic Excellence

At the direction of the Department chair, these funds provide additional support for new initiatives and excellence.
